Cooperstown, New York, in 1890 was a village of a few thousand people set on the north end of Otsego Lake, in the upper Susquehanna country. Its economy rested on farming, dairying, and a range of local mills and small manufactories, while the Susquehanna Valley and nearby rail lines carried goods and visitors to the wider region. The village had been founded by William Cooper, father of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper, and by 1890 its lakefront hotels and summer residences drew visitors from larger cities for the lake air and boating. Local life centered on churches, schools, and the village streets laid out in a grid along the shore, and the Cooper family name remained a point of local pride.
