Queens in 1922 was a borough of farms, nurseries, and fast-growing neighborhoods that had joined Greater New York only in 1898. Long Island City and Astoria held factories, and the Steinway piano works in Astoria had been a major employer since the 1870s. Commuters crossed the East River by the Queensboro Bridge, which had opened in 1909, and by ferry and rail lines that linked outlying villages such as Flushing, Jamaica, and Far Rockaway to Manhattan. Residents of the era were still divided between older communities with their own churches, civic clubs, and local identities and the new streets of row houses and detached homes spreading across former truck farms. A map of this kind was meant to show a borough in transition, where open land was giving way to houses, schools, and transit.
