In 1898 New York was the most populous state in the Union, with about seven million people living mostly in the New York City area, the Hudson Valley, and the western cities of Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse. That January the five boroughs were joined into one Greater New York, a change that reshaped city and state politics. Railroads bound the state together, with the New York Central following the Hudson and Mohawk valleys and the Erie running through the southern tier. Dairy farms, orchards, and factories in Troy, Utica, and Binghamton shipped their goods along these lines, while the Erie Canal still carried grain and freight, though rail had taken much of its traffic.
