Goshen, the seat of Orange County in New York's Hudson Valley, was a small city of brick and frame buildings in 1922, shaped by the Erie Railroad line that ran through it and by the surrounding farms. The county's economy rested on dairy, market gardening, and the muck soils of the nearby Black Dirt region, which supplied onions and other vegetables to New York City markets. Goshen's identity was closely tied to the harness racing track on its edge, one of the oldest tracks of its kind in the country, where local horsemen and visitors gathered for races. The bird's-eye view shows a town that residents of the 1920s would have recognized as a courthouse center with rail access, a trading place for the surrounding countryside.
