Gloversville, New York, in 1875 was a glove-making town in Fulton County, in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Its economy rested on glove manufacturing and the leather tanning that supplied it, and many families worked in shops and factories that turned out gloves of kid, lambskin, and other leathers for national markets. The town had grown quickly during the nineteenth century, and its streets, church spires, and factory buildings reflected a community that measured its prosperity by the trade. Residents knew Gloversville chiefly as the glove center of the country, a reputation that shaped its civic life, its employers, and its sense of itself.
