Glens Falls, New York, in 1884 was a mill village built around the Hudson River falls that gave it its name. Water power turned sawmills and paper mills along the river, and logs floated down from the Adirondack forests kept the lumber trade busy. The Champlain Canal ran through the village, and rail lines linked it to Saratoga and points south, carrying finished lumber and paper out. Residents knew their town for its mills, canal traffic, and a growing insurance business that gave Glens Falls a reputation well beyond the riverbank.
