In 1881, Little Falls, New York, sat in a narrow gorge on the Mohawk River in Herkimer County, where the falls supplied water power to the mills lining the banks. The Erie Canal ran through the village, and the New York Central's main line followed the valley, so boats and trains carried flour, lumber, textiles, and stone out of the town and brought coal and goods in. Mills and quarries gave work to many of the village's residents, and the cut stone and manufactured goods from the valley went to markets well beyond the county. Local life centered on the churches, schools, and the canal and rail traffic that set the rhythm of the streets, and the falls themselves remained the reason the settlement existed.
