Valley Falls, New York, in 1887 was a small mill village in the Hudson Valley country east of Troy, where water power from a river drop had long drawn manufacturing. Residents depended on the mills, the farms around them, and the rail and road links that carried goods toward Troy and the Hudson. Across the region that decade, factories were adding workers, and the Troy area was known widely for its collar and shirt manufacturing, which drew labor from the surrounding villages. Local life in a place this size centered on churches, schools, the mill yard, and the seasonal rhythm of the river. The lithographer L. R. Burleigh, who worked in Troy, produced views like this one to show such communities to their own residents and to outside buyers.
