Walton, New York, sat in the hills of Delaware County in 1887, a village on the West Branch of the Delaware River whose economy rested largely on dairy farming. Farmers in the surrounding valleys sent milk and cream to market, and the arrival of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad in the early 1870s gave them a direct route south toward New York City. By the late 1880s the older tanning and lumber trades that had drawn settlers to the Catskill foothills were fading, and the village's streets, churches, and commercial blocks reflected a community that depended on the farms around it. Residents of the period would have known Walton as a dairy and railroad town on the river, a stop on the line that tied the upland countryside to distant city markets.
