Sidney, in Delaware County, New York, sat on the Susquehanna River's branch in the upland dairy country of the central Catskills in 1887. Farming was the backbone of the county, with milk, cheese, and butter shipped by rail to city markets, and the valley's tanneries and sawmills drew on the hemlock forests that covered the surrounding hills. Like many small river towns of the period, Sidney was tied to the railroad for its trade and mail, and its streets, churches, and commercial blocks were the center of local civic life. Residents in 1887 would have known the village mainly as a market and service town for the farms around it, a place where grain, dairy goods, and lumber changed hands before going downriver or onto the rails.
