Walden, New York, in Orange County, was a small river village in 1887, set along the Wallkill River where mills and tanneries had long drawn on the water's power. The Wallkill Valley Railroad, which ran through the valley by the 1870s, tied the village to markets in Kingston and points south, and farm products such as milk, grain, and dairy goods moved out on its trains. The surrounding countryside was mostly working farms, so most residents would have known Walden as a place where local business, church life, and the seasonal rhythm of the farms set the pace. Like many villages in the mid-Hudson region, it depended on the steady work of its mills and its rail connections more than on any single large employer.
