Unadilla, a village in Otsego County in central New York, sat on the Susquehanna River where the Unadilla River joins it, and in 1887 its fortunes rested on farming and the railroad. Dairy farming dominated the surrounding hill country, and cheese and milk moved out of the valley by rail to markets in the cities downriver and to the east. Local residents would have known the village for its farms, its churches and schools, and its position along the river and rail lines that tied the upper Susquehanna valley to the wider state. The village's streets, mills, and houses shown in a bird's-eye view of this kind reflect a settled rural community that had grown up over the previous century, when the valley was still a frontier of land grants and river trade.
