Warwick, in Orange County, New York, was a farming village in 1887, set in a valley of orchards and dairy land near the New Jersey line. Apples were the region's best-known crop, and growers shipped fruit by wagon and rail to markets in New York City and along the Hudson. A short rail link tied the village to the wider network, which helped merchants, mills, and farmers move goods and people more easily than in earlier decades. Local life centered on churches, schools, the village stores, and the county seat politics of nearby Goshen, while residents of the valley would have known Warwick mainly as a quiet, prosperous orchard community.
