White Plains, in Westchester County, New York, was a village of several thousand people in 1887, sitting on the rail line north of New York City that had carried commuters and farm goods since the 1840s. The county seat since the Revolutionary era, it had a courthouse, churches, and a mix of mills, tanneries, and shops, while many residents worked in the city and returned by train each evening. The Battle of White Plains in October 1776 was the best-known event in its past, and local people still pointed to the old battlefield and its farmland edges. Growth in the late nineteenth century brought new homes and larger commercial blocks along the main streets, reflecting the suburban pull of the metropolis across the Harlem line.
