Sherburne, in Chenango County, New York, was a small village in 1887, and its economy rested mainly on farming, dairying, and the local trade that moved through the valley. The Chenango Canal, which had once carried grain and freight along the valley, was losing ground to the railroads by this time, and the village's connections to larger markets depended more and more on rail lines. Local life centered on churches, schools, and the village streets, where farm families came to shop, transact business, and gather for public occasions. A bird's-eye view like this one gave residents a rare chance to see their own homes, streets, and church spires laid out together, much as they would have recognized them in daily life.
