Wappingers Falls, in Dutchess County, New York, took its shape in the 1880s from the Wappingers Creek, whose drop over rock ledges powered the mills that gave the village its name and its work. Like many Hudson Valley communities, it depended on local manufacturing, with workers living close to the water and the factories along it. Farms and orchards spread across the surrounding hills, and their produce moved toward the river and the markets downstream. Poughkeepsie, the county seat, lay a short distance to the south, so village affairs were tied to county government and to the steady traffic of the Hudson corridor. In 1889, residents would have known Wappingers Falls as a mill town on a river-fed creek, a place where the water's force and the seasons of the valley set the pace of daily life.
