Stillwater, New York, was a river village in Saratoga County in 1889, set on the Hudson where the water was dammed and the banks were lined with mills, wharves, and houses. Residents knew the place for its role in the Revolution, when the Battle of Stillwater was fought on nearby ground in September 1777, weeks before the British surrender at Saratoga. By the late 1880s the village's economy rested on river trade, canal traffic, and the manufacturing that drew workers from farms and neighboring towns. The bird's-eye view shows a community still shaped by its waterfront and its streets, where churches, schools, and commercial blocks stood close to the river and to the rail and road routes that carried goods out of the valley.
