Port Henry, on the western shore of Lake Champlain in Essex County, New York, was in 1889 a village whose economy rested largely on iron. Ore from the mines at nearby Mineville was carried down by rail to the lakefront, where it was loaded onto vessels and sent to furnaces and foundries elsewhere. That traffic made the waterfront a busy industrial district of docks, ore sheds, and rail sidings. Residents would have known Port Henry first as a mining and shipping town, with its working life centered on the lake and the ore trade. This bird's-eye view shows the village as that industry shaped it.
