Schaghticoke, in Rensselaer County, New York, sat where the Hoosic River meets the Hudson in 1889, and its economy rested on the river's power and the farms of the surrounding flats. Mills along the Hoosic turned water power into goods and provided most of the village's steady work, while farm families brought their produce to town on market days. Rensselaer County's growing rail and river traffic tied the community to Troy and Albany, which made its mills and shops easier to reach. Residents of the period knew the village as a quiet river town where church congregations, lodges, and the annual fairs gave people a chance to gather, and the bird's-eye view captures those streets, buildings, and waterfront as they stood at the close of the 1880s.
