Salem, the seat of Washington County in eastern New York, appears in this 1889 bird's-eye view drawn by L. R. Burleigh, a Troy lithographer who produced many such town views across the Hudson Valley. In 1889 Salem was a small farming village, and its economy rested mainly on dairying, grain, and wool from the surrounding sheep farms, with local shops serving the countryside rather than large factories. As the county seat, the village drew residents from outlying townships for court business, the courthouse, and church and social gatherings. Its daily life was shaped by the seasons of farm work and by the steady comings and goings of people who lived in the surrounding hills.
