Hoosick Falls, New York, in 1889 was a mill village in Rensselaer County, built around the falls of the Hoosic River, which supplied the water power for its textile and manufacturing works. Cotton and woolen mills, along with other small factories, gave the village much of its work, and workers and their families lived in the streets close to the river. Rail lines running through the valley linked the village to Troy and to the markets of New England, so goods and raw materials moved in and out with some regularity. Residents of the time knew the place chiefly for its falls and its mills, and for its position in the Hoosac Valley, a region whose farms, factories, and small towns depended on the river's flow.
