Catskill, New York, in 1889 was a river village on the west bank of the Hudson, the seat of Greene County, and a stop for the steamboats that carried passengers up and down the river. Its economy rested on the river and the land behind it: freight and passenger traffic, the shipping of goods from Catskill Creek, and the bark tanneries and other businesses that drew on the forested mountains to the west. The Catskill Mountain Railroad, which ran from the river landing into the hills, carried summer visitors toward the resort hotels on the escarpment, so tourism was already part of local life. Residents knew the town as a gateway to the Catskills, a place tied to the Hudson River School painters and to the Rip Van Winkle legend that Washington Irving had made famous.
