Bainbridge, a village in Chenango County in south-central New York, sat in the Susquehanna River valley in 1889, where farming and small-scale manufacturing shaped daily life. Dairy herds, grain, and timber from the surrounding hills moved through the valley, and the river and rail connections tied local farms and mills to larger markets downstate. Like many upstate villages in the late 1880s, Bainbridge was a place where merchants, churchgoing families, and town officials kept close watch on street improvements, schools, and the fortunes of the local businesses that employed their neighbors. Residents of the day would have known the village first as a river town at the edge of the hill country, a community whose prosperity still depended on the seasons, the weather on the river, and the steady work of the people who lived there.
