Fonda, the seat of Montgomery County in the Mohawk Valley of eastern New York, was a small farming and trade village in 1889. Its position along the Mohawk River, the Erie Canal, and the main line of the New York Central Railroad tied it to the larger markets of Albany, Schenectady, and the Hudson, and it served as a stop for farm produce and goods moving through the valley. Nearby Johnstown and Gloversville were known for leather and glove making, which drew workers and supplies through the county. Fonda's residents would have known their village mainly as the county seat, where courts, county offices, and the annual fairs and church and lodge gatherings marked the calendar. The village was a quiet, orderly place where agriculture and rail traffic shaped daily life.
