In 1882 Niagara Falls, New York, was still a village whose livelihood rested mainly on the cataract itself. Railroad lines brought visitors from Buffalo and farther afield, and hotels, souvenir shops and carriage drivers clustered near the Cataract House. Honeymooners and sightseers crossed to Goat Island and rode the Maid of the Mist ferry toward the foot of the falls, a trade that shaped nearly every local business. The hydraulic and electrical power works that would bring factories to the gorge lay about a decade away, so residents knew their town for its hotels and the roar of the water rather than for mills or smokestacks.
