Jamestown, New York, in 1882 was a busy manufacturing village in Chautauqua County, set along the Chadakoin River near the southern end of Chautauqua Lake. Its economy rested on wood and metal work, especially furniture making, and on woolen and other mills that drew workers from across western New York and from Swedish immigrant families. Railroad lines brought raw lumber and goods in and shipped finished products out, which helped the village grow steadily through the 1870s and early 1880s. Residents also knew their town as the gateway to the lakeside summer grounds at Chautauqua, where the adult education movement drew crowds each season, and the bird's-eye view shows a town of church spires, factory yards, and streets laid out along the valley floor.
