In 1882 the Long Island Rail Road was the main link between Brooklyn and the farms, fishing villages, and seaside resorts that stretched eastward across Long Island. Its tracks carried market produce such as potatoes and vegetables from the island's truck farms into the city, and they carried city families out to the beaches and summer hotels of the south shore. Brooklyn was then a separate city of several hundred thousand residents, and its growth depended heavily on the rail and ferry traffic that tied it to Manhattan and the island beyond. The line's Brooklyn terminal on Atlantic Avenue was the starting point for much of that movement. For residents of the period, the railroad was less a curiosity than the everyday way goods, commuters, and holidaymakers got around the island.
