Ithaca, New York, in 1882 was a small city at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake and the seat of Tompkins County, with its commerce tied to the lake and to the railroads running along the valley floor. Cornell University, chartered in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, stood on the hill above the town, and by the early 1880s its students and professors were a common sight in the streets and shops below. Local mills and workshops produced a range of goods for regional markets. Residents also prized the gorges cut by Fall Creek and Six Mile Creek, where waterfalls and steep glens drew walkers and picnickers. Many people of the period knew the town as a college town set among falls and ravines.
