Binghamton, New York, in 1882 was a river city where the Chenango and Susquehanna meet, and its growth rested on manufacturing and rail. Factories there made shoes, cigars, and the carpetbags for which the city became known, and the Erie Railroad's main line helped move those goods to national markets. Binghamton had been chartered as a city in 1867, and by the early 1880s its civic life centered on churches, schools, and a growing downtown of brick commercial blocks. Residents would have known their town as a busy industrial center in the Southern Tier, where the valley's hills pressed close around the working districts along the rivers.
