Binghamton, New York, in 1901 was a manufacturing city in the Southern Tier, where the Susquehanna's branches met beneath steep wooded hills. Its factories and rail yards drew workers from nearby farms and from immigrant families arriving from Europe, and streetcars and delivery wagons crowded its main thoroughfares. That year many residents followed the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, which opened in May and drew visitors from across the state, so when President William McKinley was shot there in September, the news reached households throughout the valley. Civic life still centered on the churches, fraternal lodges, and newspapers that gave the city its sense of itself.
