Elmira, New York, in 1901 was a manufacturing city in the Chemung River valley, known for its iron works, bridge and car builders, and a large agricultural implement and carriage trade tied to the Erie Railroad, which ran through the town and drew freight and passengers from New York and the Great Lakes. The city had grown rapidly after the Civil War, when it hosted a major Union prisoner-of-war camp, and by the turn of the century its population had passed 30,000. Elmira was also a center of civic institutions, including the Elmira Reformatory, a national model for young offenders, and Elmira College, the country's first college chartered to grant degrees to women. Residents of the era would have known the city for its industry, its rail links, and the Chemung Valley farms that supplied its markets.
