Fishkill Landing, on the east bank of the Hudson in Dutchess County, New York, was a small river town in 1886 whose fortunes rested on the river and the rail line that ran along its shore. The Hudson River Railroad, later part of the New York Central system, carried passengers and freight past the landing, and steamboats and sloops tied up at its docks to load goods bound for New York City. Nearby Matteawan, a separate manufacturing village, was known for its textile and machinery works, and the two communities were closely tied through commerce and labor. Burleigh's bird's-eye view shows the town as local residents of the period would have recognized it, with its church spires, streets, and riverfront laid out for the eye.
