Fort Plain sat on the south bank of the Mohawk River in Montgomery County in 1891, and its name recalled a stockade built during the Revolution on the valley floor. By then the village lived by the river's transportation routes, with the Erie Canal and the New York Central main line running through the valley to carry grain, dairy goods, and manufactured wares east toward Albany and west toward Buffalo. Mills and small factories along the water supplied local jobs, while surrounding farms sent milk and produce to the village markets. A bird's-eye view like this one would have shown residents the churches, schools, and streets they knew well, and it captured a place still shaped by its position on the canal and rail corridor.
