New York City in 1891 was a crowded island city whose streets were choked with horse-drawn traffic, and its elevated steam railways ran above them on iron structures along Second, Third, Sixth, and Ninth Avenues. The lines, operated by the Manhattan Railway Company, carried clerks, shopkeepers, and laborers between downtown offices and the growing residential districts uptown, and they helped make the city's population boom possible. Their steam engines dropped soot and cinders onto the street and shook the apartment windows that lined the routes, so residents complained often, and the debate over noise and smoke fed into later plans for electric traction and underground subways. The view shows the tangle of track and stations that most New Yorkers of the day rode every morning and evening.
