New York City, Brooklyn, and the surrounding shoreline in 1885 were tied together by bridges, ferries, and a dense web of rail lines feeding the waterfront. The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, had only recently linked Manhattan and Brooklyn, and the two cities were still separate municipalities that would not consolidate into the greater city until 1898. Manhattan's population was well over a million by then, and its garment shops, printing houses, sugar refineries, and shipping firms drew workers from across Europe and from the American countryside. Brooklyn, with its shipyards, breweries, and rapidly building neighborhoods, was known to many residents as the "City of Churches" and a place of homes rather than tenements. A view from above would have shown the harbor as the lifeblood of both shores.
