New York City in 1907 was a port of roughly 4 million people, and its financial district at the lower end of Manhattan sat at the center of national money. In October, the Knickerbocker Trust Company failed after a run on its deposits, which set off the Panic of 1907 as depositors lined up at trust companies across the city. J. P. Morgan gathered bankers in his Wall Street library to shore up weakened institutions and arrange emergency loans, and many New Yorkers came away doubting the safety of their savings. Immigration was also at a peak, with more than a million arrivals passing through Ellis Island in the harbor that year. The dense piers, warehouses and office buildings in this view belonged to a city that measured its prosperity by shipping and securities.
