Brewster, in Putnam County, New York, was a farming and dairy town in 1887, and its growth depended on the New York and Harlem Railroad, whose line brought it into direct contact with the New York City market. Milk from the surrounding farms moved south by rail in large daily quantities, which made dairying the backbone of the local economy and tied the village's fortunes to city prices and shipping schedules. The bird's-eye view shows a compact village laid out around the railroad, with its depot, streets, and farm-based businesses clustered near the tracks. Residents of the period would have known Brewster first as a stop on the Harlem line and as a place where the countryside's output was loaded for the city.
