Coney Island in 1906 was the largest seaside amusement district in the United States, a sandy peninsula at the southern tip of Brooklyn that drew crowds by trolley and elevated train from across New York City. The Brighton, Manhattan Beach, and Sea Beach lines carried visitors out from the city, and the resort's hotels, bathhouses, and boardwalk supported a large seasonal workforce of concessionaires, performers, and laborers. Luna Park, which opened in 1903 with its towers and electric lighting, and Dreamland, which opened in 1904, were the two great attractions competing for the nickel and dime of working-class visitors. A bird's-eye view like this one shows the grid of streets and the crowded midway that residents knew as the people's playground.
