Cobleskill, in the Schoharie Valley of central New York, was a farm town in 1883, and its fortunes rested on dairying, grain, and the trade that moved through its shops and stores. The Albany and Susquehanna Railroad ran through the valley, linking local farms and merchants to Albany and to markets farther south, and the depot made the village a shipping point for milk, produce, and goods. Residents of the period knew Cobleskill as a quiet, orderly community of churches, schools, and family businesses set along Cobleskill Creek, with its life shaped by the seasons and the Schoharie County roads. This bird's-eye view shows the village as its own people saw it, laid out in streets, houses, and church spires at a time when rail connections were beginning to reshape small upstate towns.
