Clinton, New York, in 1885 was a small village in Oneida County, set a few miles southeast of Utica in the Mohawk Valley. Its identity was tied to Hamilton College, the men's liberal arts college named for Alexander Hamilton, which sat on the rise above the village streets and gave the place much of its character. Most surrounding families depended on farming, and the dairy and agricultural trade that flowed through the wider Oneida County region shaped daily life and local commerce. Residents of the time would have known Clinton as a college town and a quiet agricultural community, with its economic fortunes linked closely to nearby Utica and the rail and canal routes that carried goods through the valley.
