Greenwich, New York, in 1885 was a village in eastern Washington County, where farming and small manufacturing along the Battenkill shaped daily life. Dairy and grain farms surrounded the village, and the river's current powered mills that processed local crops and goods for nearby markets. The Gilded Age was in full swing, and in March 1885 Grover Cleveland had just been inaugurated, so local talk often turned to national politics, county fairs, church life, and the growing rail links that tied rural towns like this one to Albany and Troy. Residents would have known Greenwich as a quiet, working community on the road between the Hudson valley and the Vermont line, where neighbors gathered for agricultural fairs, lodge meetings, and the Saturday trade on Main Street.
