Canton, the seat of St. Lawrence County in northern New York, was a small village of farms, mills, and college buildings in 1885, set along the Grasse River. Its economy rested on the dairy and general farming of the surrounding countryside, and the river's water power supported local mills and shops. St. Lawrence University, chartered at Canton in 1856, gave the village a second identity as a college town, and its campus would have been among the most noticeable features to anyone viewing the village from above. County courts, elections, and market days drew farmers and townspeople to the center of the village. Like many North Country communities, Canton looked to larger neighbors such as Ogdensburg on the St. Lawrence River for wider news and trade.
