Canton, in St. Lawrence County in northern New York, was a village of farms, mills, and a college in 1885. St. Lawrence University, chartered in the 1850s, had become the village's main institution, and its campus gave the community a student population and a steady stream of professors and visitors. Canton also served as the county seat, so its courthouse, lawyers, and county officials drew people in from the surrounding towns. The surrounding farms were devoted largely to dairying and grain, and the Grasse River, which runs through the village, supplied water power for local mills. Residents in 1885 would have known Canton first as a college town set in the working farmland of the north country.
