Gouverneur, New York, in 1885 was a village in the northern part of St. Lawrence County, named for Gouverneur Morris, the statesman who helped shape the New York and federal constitutions. Its economy rested on the surrounding dairy and grain farms and on the local stone trade, since nearby quarries produced marble that was shipped out for building and monument work. Residents also knew the district for its mineral deposits, including talc, which was beginning to draw outside investment. Village life centered on its churches, schools, and the storefronts along the main streets, where farmers came to trade and where the rail connections that tied the county to larger markets shaped daily commerce.
