Camden, a village in the town of Camden in Oneida County, New York, is shown here in 1885, a few decades after the Erie Canal and the railroads had tied central New York's farm towns to larger markets. The surrounding town was largely dairy and grain country, and its residents went to Utica and Rome for mills, markets, and rail connections. Like many villages of the Gilded Age, Camden built its civic life around its churches, schools, and main street, while farm families brought produce and goods to town on weekdays. By 1885 the region's economy was shifting from small shops toward factory work, and the village's streets and rooftops in this bird's-eye view reflect a community that still measured its prosperity by the harvest and the rail schedule.
