Lowville, the county seat of Lewis County in the Black River valley of northern New York, was a farm town in 1885, and its economy rested on dairying and the cheese made from local milk. Cheese factories had spread through the surrounding hills over the previous two decades, and the county was known across the state for its dairy output, which drew buyers and shipping traffic to the village. Lumbering had been important earlier in the century, but by the 1880s farms and pastures had replaced most of the forest on the slopes around town. Lowville's courthouse, churches, and the Lowville Academy, founded in the early 1800s, gave the village its civic and schooling life, and residents would have known it chiefly as the center of county government and the dairy trade.
