Hamilton, New York, in 1885 was a village in Madison County, in the hill country of central New York, where farming and dairying supported most households. Cheese factories and creameries were spreading through the county in those years, and farm wagons carried milk and produce into the village. Its best-known institution was Madison University, the Baptist school that had grown out of the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution and that townspeople would later know as Colgate. A bird's-eye view of the village from that year shows a community built around its college campus and its main streets, the kind of place where church, school, and commerce were closely tied together.
