Clifton Springs, in Ontario County in western New York, was known by 1892 mainly for its sulfur and mineral springs and the health institution built around them. The Clifton Springs Sanitarium drew patients and summer visitors from well beyond the county, and it sustained a village economy of hotels, boarding houses, and services for those who came to take the waters. Surrounding farms supplied the district, which lay within the Finger Lakes country, where fruit growing and dairying were central to local livelihoods. A bird's-eye view like this one would have shown residents and visitors a village whose streets, hotel grounds, and sanitarium buildings were shaped as much by the health trade as by ordinary town life.
