Caledonia, a village in Livingston County in western New York, appears in this 1892 bird's-eye view at a time when the Genesee Valley economy rested mainly on farming, with wheat, dairy, and fruit moving out by rail and canal to larger markets. The village's streets, churches, schools, and commercial blocks were laid out in the decades after settlement spread into the region in the early 1800s, and by the 1890s its main businesses served surrounding farm families. Residents in 1892 would have known Caledonia as a quiet county village where civic life centered on the church, the school, the town hall, and the local merchants, and where news of the wider state traveled through the railroad depot and weekly newspapers. Local history from this decade is thinner than for larger cities, so the broader pattern of Livingston County farm life offers the most reliable context for the town shown here.
