Lancaster, New York, in 1892 was a village and town in eastern Erie County, a short distance northeast of Buffalo, where farms and small mills sat alongside the growing city's commuter reach. Dairy and grain farming, along with the local mills that drew on the creeks running through the town, formed the backbone of its economy. Buffalo's rapid expansion as a grain-shipping and manufacturing center during these years pulled workers and goods through the surrounding towns, so Lancaster residents watched their countryside slowly take on suburban habits. Those who lived there would have known it as a quiet farming community that stood close to a major industrial city, with its daily life shaped by church, school, and the seasons on the land.
